What is sports massage?
Sports massage is the purposeful manipulation of the body’s soft tissue. Muscles, tendons and ligaments are manipulated to aid recovery, athletic development and sports performance along with injury rehab.
How can it help me?
Sports massage is considered by many elite and recreational athletes to be a fundamental part of their training and recovery routine. Along with other benefits they report that a sports massage helps them train harder, improve performance, prevent injury, and recover quicker.
Professional athletes and their coaches have sworn by massage therapy for years, going so far as to keep massage therapists on the payroll indefinitely. Until recently, there hasn’t been conclusive evidence that massage really does have a positive effect on athletes. However, thanks to new studies and some backing by reputable sources, the benefits of massage are being taken seriously. And those benefits are not just for the pros. They’re extended to anyone who participates in a regular exercise program.
It can be used in the treatment of specific injuries, such as hamstring strains, as well as to help correct muscle imbalances, overuse and postural issues. It is these issues which should be corrected in order to prevent future injuries and improve the efficiency of our muscles and so enhance our performance. Deep Tissue Massage will help stimulate and improve blood flow to the areas treated and kick start your bodies own natural healing process.
You will feel many benefits from a regular massage program. Like exercise itself, the benefits are cumulative, meaning the more regularly you receive a massage, the more you’ll reap their advantages. Think of it as preventative maintenance. We recommend scheduling “once a week if possible or every other week if you’re training at a high level”. If getting a weekly or bi-weekly massage isn’t in the budget or you don’t have time, we suggest aiming for twice a month.
Of course you don’t have to be an athlete to benefit from or even enjoy athletic massage. Sports Massage can help people who’ve never even played sports! Whether you’re an Iron Man, an office worker, or a soon-to-be mum—sports massage can help relieve pain and tension, facilitate movement and encourage relaxation.
Sports massage can be booked as a one off treatment to ease muscular tension and aid recovery post event, or as a series of sessions to complement your training and aid performance throughout the season.
